San Francisco-based artist Ben Venom got his nickname from the Atlanta punk rock scene. Beginning with the t-shirts from heavy-metal bands, the artist transforms them into quilts using the traditional techniques of the hand sewn craft.
“Two opposing forces colliding” is how the artist describes his work in the video below. “You have heavy-metal which is tough and loud and fast, and you have quilting which is soft and kind of slow and won’t hurt anybody.”
With an MFA from San Francisco Art Institute, Venom has exhibited internationally, showing his unusual hand-stitched textiles composed of images of “vintage tattoos, the occult, and motorcycle gangs.”
