20 images from the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards shortlist

This year’s Sony World Photography Awards, hosted by the World Photography Organization, have showcased a wide range of images taken from places around the globe. There were a record number of entries this year with nearly 140,000 images submitted by photographers from 166 countries.

Sometimes a photo defies time by catching that split-second shot, and sometimes a photo shows us new ways of seeing through its imagery. Below is a selection of our favorite images.
